There are over 800 million people going hungry today, nearly12% of the human population. This includes approximately 26 million in the United States of America. Famine threatens six Southern African countries. Obviously, the “benefits” of Globalisation leave much to be desired.
Last week, in Rome, the U.N. Food and Agricultural Organisation hosted “World Food Summit: Five Years Later”. Unfortunately, most food donors did not think the event imortant enough to attend.
Clare Short, Great Britain's Overseas Development Secretary, commented earlier, "I'm not sending a minister because I don't expect it to be an effective summit"
Nevertheless, after four days of much well-meaning rhetoric, a Declaration was unanimously endorsed by the nations in attendance, recommending that international organisations, the private sector, governments and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) “reinforce their efforts so as to act as an international alliance against hunger.”
FAO Director-General Jacques Diouf asked the delegates at the closing session, "Let's start the race against time now and show that together we can win the war against hunger and poverty, against skepticism and egoism."
