Today, news is breaking in many of the media outlets that an independent inquiry into Gulf War Syndrome is to be held. The inquiry will be chaired by the retired judge Lord Lloyd of Berwick and it has been reported that the hearings will be held in public.
For over a decade the UK Government and the ministry of defence have refused to accept the illness known as Gulf War Syndrome. In a sensational u-turn, it now appears that the continued campaign waged by veterans has contributed to a change of heart by the government department.
Gulf War Syndrome UK Support Group now considers that the time is right for the issues faced by Gulf era veterans to be addressed. For far too long, many Gulf veterans have suffered through their service and many have even paid the ultimate price for their loyal service with their lives. Veterans demand proper medical assessment and treatment and proper compensation for their sufferings. As the questions remain unanswered the proud veterans of the “mother of all battles” continue to suffer and die.
Gulf War Syndrome UK Support Group would like to offer a cautious welcome to the news but would like to know if the decision has been announced in order to overshadow bad news about the Labour Party local and European Parliament election results or is it a genuine offer in order to address historical Gulf War issues.
In an effort to address staggering suicide, car crash and ill-health rates, Gulf War Syndrome UK Support Group now calls upon the government to match the announcement of the independent inquiry with specific and unprecedented medical assessment and treatment of veterans. This is requested in order to protect the health of past, present and future Gulf Theatre Of Operations personnel.
Gulf War Syndrome UK Support Group advises all who have been affected by Gulf War Syndrome to register as an inquiry witness, as soon as it is possible to do so.
