The World Court and the Israeli Wall/Fence: Day One

Article image The Hague

Whoever caused the bombing of an Israeli bus, this Sunday is no friend of either Palestinians or Israelis. Such mindless actions merely serve to strengthen the hard-liners in Israel and the United States, thereby prolonging the suffering of both Israelis and Palestinians.
True Peace can come only through negotiatiations and how can honest negotiations occur when lives are being sacrificed on the altars of insanity ?

Meanwhile, the United Nations General Assembly has sought a legal solution to the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict by asking for an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice.

Simply put, the General Assembly is asking the World Court if Israel has the legal authority to erect a barrier in the occupied territories.
There is no question as to whether Israel has the authority to build its “Security Fence” or “Separation Wall”, as it is best know, on its own land. Israel can build whatever it wants on its own territory – even if it is counter-productive. By walling potential enemies”out”, Israel is walling Israelis “in” and thereby building two ghettoes.

Even if the Court decides that Israel may not build in the occupied territories, however, that will not mean the end of “The Wall”. That decision is purely political and not within the scope of the World Court.
