Indications of another possible betrayal by United Nations Forces, this time in Rwanda, may soon be forthcoming.
During the massacres in Rwanda, during 1994, the United Nations Assistance Mission to Rwanda (UNAMIR) was protecting the Ecole Technique Officielle (ETO), a school in Kigali. Thousands of Tutsis and moderate Hutus had sought refuge there, from the massacring Hutus.
After assurances by Rwandan Colonel Léonidas Rusatira (Hutu), that those seeking refuge would be safe, in spite of the fact that ten Belgian soldiers who had been guarding the Prime Minister, Agathe Uwilingiyimana, had been killed, the U.N. forces handed protection of the school over to Colonel Rusatira and left.
Shortly after their departure, on 11 April 1994, the refugees were attacked by soldiers, allegedly led by Rusatira and by Interahamwe, “volunteers” led by George Rutaganda. Hundreds of Tutsis and moderate Hutus were killed at the ETO school.
