Suspino-A Cry for Roma will screen at the 12th Annual Seattle Human Rights Film Festival – Presented by Amnesty International on Sunday, November 9th at 4:00 p.m. at the Seattle Art Museum, 100 University Street, Downtown Seattle.

Pogroms (mob violence), poverty, inhuman living conditions, “No Roma Allowed.” In Piatra Neamt, Romania, the mayor has declared that he will move local Roma into an abandoned chicken farm, erect barbed wire fences and patrol the grounds by guards with dogs. It’s not a scene from a horrific past-it’s 2002, the place is Romania, the persecuted are Roma and theirs is a human rights crisis.

In SUSPINO—A CRY FOR ROMA, filmmakers Gillian Darling Kovanic and Rudi Kovanic have captured the human face of suffering and the centuries-old history of Roma (known as Gypsies) oppression. “The truth is, we’re hated the world over which springs from history when we were slaves,” says Emilian Niculae, a Romanian Roma activist now living in Toronto, Canada, and awaiting the result of his claim for refugee status. An intimate profile of a Roma refugee family (filmed over 2 1/2 years) who fled persecution in Romania only to find it again in Italy, and intense scenes of atrocities committed against the Roma reveal a peoples’ struggle for dignity in the face of extreme injustice.

This feature-length film has won three awards at the 2003 Chicago International Television Festival: Gold Plaque for Special Achievement in Cinematography/Videography; Gold Plaque for Special Achievement Music Score; and a Silver Plaque for Best Achievement in Overall Sound. It has been nominated for Best Justice and Human Rights documentary at the 2003 Vermont Film Festival, won Honourable Mention and Excellence in Media of Print at the Columbus International Film and Video Festival, and is in competition at the 2003 International Festival of Human Rights in Barcelona, Spain.
