Franciscans International President Speaks Out On The Crisis In The Holy Land

New York.

To World Leaders and Men and Women of Good Will:
As an NGO in consultative status with the Economic and Security Council, Franciscans International advocates for peacemaking, concern of the poor and the care of creation at the United Nations. Usually we bring the concerns of those with whom we minister to government leaders but today we are also bringing the suffering of our own sisters and brothers who are affected by the escalation of injustice and terror in the Holy Land.

For the past several weeks, Franciscans have shared directly in the tragedy as the descendants of Abraham living in the Holy Land increased their mutual suffering and deepened their mistrust. There has been an appalling loss of lives. Villages have been destroyed and terror has spread. Some children, driven by despair, have resorted to unspeakable crimes against their neighbors. Other children—seeking only refuge and safety with the friars have been deprived of food, water and medical attention. Leaders have justified terrorism and extra judicial executions, in clear violation of international standards of human rights.
